Have you ever wondered why Kaunas is called the Sports Capital of Lithuania?
We invite you on an exclusive educational journey, “Kaunas Full of Sports,” which will let you discover the city through its deep-rooted love for basketball. This route connects history, legends, and places that still pulse with a sporting spirit today.
The unique itinerary begins at the Lithuanian Sports Museum, where you will learn about the origins of sports in Lithuania. Here, you’ll find not only exhibits but also stories about pioneers of physical culture, sports ideas in the interwar period, and how they shaped the national identity. The museum houses awards from Olympic participants, trophies from world and European champions, personal belongings, training equipment, and even a unique exhibition on Lithuanian circus history. It’s an extraordinary opportunity to see how much sport has meant — and still means — to Lithuanians.
The second stop is the Lithuanian House of Basketball, a modern, interactive space that brings together the entire basketball community: from the very first steps of the game in the country, through triumphs on the international stage, to today’s moments of glory. This is where you will meet basketball legends, see the most famous trophies, touch historical moments, and understand what it means to be a fan in Lithuania. Visiting here creates an emotional connection with what Lithuanians call their second religion.
Next, we visit the Lithuanian Sports University, which has been nurturing sports leaders for nearly a century. This university educated and launched the careers of basketball legends such as Modestas Paulauskas, Valdemaras Chomičius, Rimas Kurtinaitis, and Sergejus Jovaiša. In 1999, current Lithuanian national team and Kaunas “Žalgiris” coach Kazys Maksvytis began his coaching career here. Even the 1937–1938 European champions trained in its halls. This is a place where sport is created not only on the court but also in the mind.
The journey concludes at the Kaunas Sports Hall and Darius and Girėnas Stadium — two historic sites where legends were born. The Sports Hall, built in 1939 specifically for the European Men’s Basketball Championships, remains a symbol of victory to this day. Darius and Girėnas Stadium recalls the first National Olympics of 1938 — a global gathering of Lithuanian athletes that brought together hundreds of sportspeople.
“Kaunas Full of Sports” is not just an educational tour but a journey through our country’s history, values, and pride. It’s an experience that inspires — both athletes and those still searching for their own path.
